The outside works on the Blue Bell are progressing well and local contractors Sussex Landworks and volunteers are benefitting from excellent weather. Enhancing the paved areas and making the garden safe to access are part of all that and the future availability of outside space should allow us to serve hopefully sooner rather than later with the distancing restrictions in place. The outside spaces we have as part of the property have not been useable for a long time but it is a valuable community asset we are bringing back to life with the help of the grants we have secured and also with help from volunteers.
The decoration is about to start but the contractors South Oak are first taking down the chimney on the south side. This is no longer in use and has been a source of rainwater leaks for a long time; we are curing this problem once and for all time by removing the chimney altogether and reconstructing the roof to make it into a simple downward slope rather than complicated corners and nooks and crannies which would otherwise remain a constant source of trouble and maintenance cost.
The outside will be painted a shade of off-white and the doors and windows shades of blue, in keeping with our name. Some of the outside area is paved with brick, which look quite bright now but will quickly weather to a mellow look, in keeping with our area. This has enabled us to create some extra, accessible area for outside seating.
